This is the enrolment page for customers in the European Union. Customers outside of the EU should sign up here.

This is an in-depth online class that builds on my Geometric Weaving course. It looks at weaving geometric shapes on a larger scale, and constructing complex designs that fit together on the loom.

I’ll be sharing what I’ve learnt in almost a decade of weaving professionally, and helping you increase the scale and ambition of your own tapestry designs.

Price & Checkout

The price is £90 + VAT which is added at the checkout. Please note that Gumroad is a US-based platform, so currency at the checkout will show in US dollars.

About The Class

In this class I'll be demonstrating how to weave a complex geometric tapestry on a much larger scale, from start to finish. I'll look at the design process, from choosing colours to creating a cartoon, and how to prepare your loom for weaving.

Each subsequent video will look at weaving a different part of the tapestry. Detailed patterns and templates will be provided so you can replicate my design, but I'll also be sharing advice on how to design your own. Finally, I'll demonstrate how to finish the completed tapestry and prepare it for display.

Each video is pre-recorded, with closed captions and transcripts, so you can watch at your own pace, as many times as you need.

Detailed patterns and templates will be provided for you to download, along with a PDF handbook summarising the class content.

If you need additional help and guidance, I’ll be answering student questions via email and in a private community group!

Best of all, you get lifetime access to all class content, so you can come back to the course as many times as you need.

What You'll Need

A Large Tapestry Loom

You'll need a loom large enough to weave a tapestry measuring 65cm wide and 60cm high, at a sett of 8epi (8 warps per inch). Alternatively, you can use the smaller pattern templates to weave the design in smaller sections.
Get in touch with my team here if you’re not sure if your loom is suitable for the class.

Warp Yarn

The warp yarn I am using in the class is a 12/9 cotton warp. This is 1mm thick or 24 WPI. You will need approximately 200g / 7oz for the course.

Weft Yarn

I am using 4ply and DK weight rug yarn in 7 different colours. The yarns I use are all between 15 and 22 WPI.

You can use rug yarn, or another sturdy, worsted wool yarn. You will need around 5-7 colours, in quantities of around 100-150g (3.5-5oz) each one. If you plan to use more of a single colour, aim for 200g (7oz)

Weaving Tools

You will need at least one flat stick shuttle, a tapestry bobbin, and a comb. For finishing your tapestry, you’ll need a tapestry needle and sharp scissors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I access this class?

When you sign up, you'll automatically get an email from my online course platform (Podia) inviting you to create an account. Once you've created an account, you'll be able to access the class any time via the log-in page here.

If you don't receive this email, please email us at info@balfourand.co so we can give you access.

How much tapestry experience do I need for this class?

I recommend this class for intermediate weavers and up, and you should have some tapestry weaving experience under your belt. If you've taken my Geometric Weaving online course you will be prepared for this class.

How is this course different to your Geometric Weaving course?

In the Geometric Weaving course, I focused on one design at a time and looked at different techniques in each one. Here, the techniques and designs are all combined and scaled up, an additional layer of complexity.

Can I use a different loom for this course?

I am using a large tapestry frame loom with a weaving area of 70cm x 80cm. If you want to recreate my design exactly you will need a loom large enough to accomodate a tapestry 65cm wide and 60cm high, at a sett of 8epi (8 warps per inch).

Alternatively, you can weave the design in smaller sections, using the small patterns as a guide. In that case, you'll still need a loom that can accomodate a sett of 8epi.

Can I download the videos?

While you can download the PDF workbook and the patterns & templates, the videos themselves cannot be downloaded. Our videos are hosted on a platform similar to Youtube - if your internet connection is not strong enough to watch Youtube, it will not be strong enough for this course. Please check this before you sign up!

Why is there a separate shop for EU students?

Since Brexit, regulations around paying EU VAT have gotten very complicated! To ensure we're in compliance with those regulations, we've set up this shop using Gumroad, which automatically processes EU VAT on our behalf. Please contact my team at info@balfourand.co if you have any questions about this!
